A month of crash course goat caretaking with the most un-ideal of first-time goats for an inexperienced goat ownerPrepare yourself for an ongoing tale of entertainment...
The story of the goat who showed up in the driveway will continue to unravel - check back for updates and new posts as the story unfolds into the collection of words below! This is Gus. Gus Von Anderson, Duke of District Township to be exact. It's a name that was formally cemented via text message with my neighbor around the corner, whom I'd never met in 8 years of living around the corner but now have both his and his wife's contact information in my cell phone... because of this goat. And he isn't the only one. In fact, I met seven neighbors in one day all by the same circumstance. I was looking for a goat... not my goat.. well yes, my goat but not exactly... well, we are caring for it... yes it's the one no one could catch... okay it might be ours.

While you can, that is... Winter began on December 21st and will come to a close in less than a month. Any season is perfect for reading, but here's how I try and make the most out of the cold months' story time opportunities.
It happens to the best of us, right? You go into a store aiming to fetch a few groceries, and you leave with a few bags of kitchen staples and some brain fodder about ships. Right. Glad I'm not alone on that one. And I'm glad I had my ears open because otherwise I wouldn't have known about Blackbeard the pirate and Tom Sukanen. Blackbeard is a familiar name to most, but most are missing out on the compelling story of Tom Sukanen and his Great Depression prairie ship. Let me explain...
Look out, sleds coming through!Winter is here and so is Issue #8 of The Picketwire, fresh out of the cold and ready to warm your mind with tales of talking cars and junkyard bears. Have a winter picnic with Penelope, make a snowman with Douglas Furr, do some sledding with the Littles, and don't forget to grab a hot cocoa and stroll along with the Twigmin and Leif holiday tree tour. When you're ready to hunker down, get cozy with The Twins and enjoy the Possum Nook double feature all about Tanzi and her Impala.
24 pages of good vibes and good tidings will keep you smiling through the new year! Let's start off with a poem... The Impala Bear - Part 2So there's a bear in the Impala.. now what?
The story of Tanzi's discovery continues and comes to a close in Part 2! (Didn't read the first part? Jump back to the previous story here) The Impala Bear - Part 1Occasionally, one sets out to find a particular thing and in the process, finds another un-particular thing. So was the case with the Impala bear. Part 1 of this multi-narrative teddy tale brings you up to speed on the "what, where, when, and how". Stay tuned for Part 2 to get the skinny on the "who"!
Ready to check out some old cars? Got your closed-toe shoes, your gloves, a few dollars to get in the gate? Come then, please walk through the junkyard with me on a fine November afternoon... In honor of National Pumpkin Day, which occurs every October 26th, we're sharing a spooky little yarn about a small red pumpkin that creates quite an adventure for little Hedgie Wilkinson.
Grab a cup of cocoa or something sip-worthy and settle in for a lengthy trip... from Douglas' house to the pumpkin patch, to the farm, then into the swamp, then back to Douglas' house. Watch out for Jaloos... This super simple craft utilizes unused items....aka t r a s h .... to create a spooky little creature that can't wait to hang out and scare your friends. But you know what's even scarier than this little ghost? Trash in the ocean. Do you have what it takes to create a recycled ghost? If you have an old t-shirt or piece of cloth... ...a wad of plastic wrap, used packing tape... ...a plastic bag to stuff it into... ..and some glue and other random trash... then YES, you do! In this four season climate, summer always seem to show up late and leave early. We've officially said goodbye to summer this month with the arrival of fall. People always miss something iconic of summer. The beach. C a m p i n g. Festivals. FLIP FLOPS. Bees.
I'll miss the long sunny days of course. The cicadas screaming through the woods. The song of the racetrack on a Saturday night. Packing a truck for a long trip. Morning coffee extra early before the day gets too hot. But mostly.... Need a fresh breakfast routine? Try out this savory and satisfying omelet, bursting with flavor thanks to three signature spices and two unlikely summertime ingredients. (Hint: One starts with a "Z") Chef Gruntly and Farmer have teamed up to create this simple, garden fresh recipe. And, you can find it in the summer issue of The Picketwire! |
