Summer's end is approaching - enjoy a casual read for the last lazy days of August and spruce up your yogurt jars with leftover socks for the cutest flower bouquets you've ever seen. THE PICKETWIRE - SUMMER ISSUE NOW AVAILABLE Pollinator wasps, proof of miracles, and a little bit about a black squirrel named Earl... these things and more can be found among the pages of The Picketwire's summer issue. You can read it at the link below for free (click the "preview" option) or grab a physical copy from Blurb. GRABBING THINGS - one of Earl's bad habits. www.blurb.com/b/11252834-the-picketwire-summer-2022 Socks - the uses are endless! The foundation of Douglas Furr's hat making workshop, socks have been used in quite a few of his "trash crafts", including last year's sock gourd DIY (pop back over to the 2021 October blog post for a sock-gourd-how-to: the-spookiest-possum-we-know.html ). What we are proposing this time is a possibly the simplest use for the lone socks of the laundry room, the single-but-looking-for-their-other-half members of your dresser drawers. While both gourd and hat eligible, if you just don't feel like crafting and want to give that loner a good use, here's how:
DRESS UP YOUR BOTTLES Summertime brings with it the abundance of flowers; dancing along the roadside, beaming from your hanging baskets and pots, standing tall in your flower beds and gardens. Cut flowers and flower bouquets are such a simple way to brighten a room - or someone's day. However, not always as readily available is a decent looking vase to display your flowers in, especially in a pinch. Nobody wants to hand off a gorgeous arrangement of zinnias in a water bottle or a sunflower in a beer can. There's a fix for that - enter THE SOLITARY SOCK. The choices of color, texture, size - it's all up to you. Cut the toe end off (and save it for a hat) and use the long end for a tall bottle. Chop it short for a small jar (as shown here on a yogurt jar). Add buttons or pins to it. Sew your favorite patch to it that you never got around to attaching to your jacket in back high school. Add a piece of Velcro and make interchangeable cards to display on it - who wouldn't want to be greeted in the kitchen every morning by a brightly striped vase of flowers that states "BE HAPPY, COFFEE IS ON THE WAY!" or other encouraging statements? Single socks are a part of life, so let them be part of yours - spruce up your trash and BLOOM!
