This super simple craft utilizes unused items....aka t r a s h .... to create a spooky little creature that can't wait to hang out and scare your friends. But you know what's even scarier than this little ghost? Trash in the ocean. Do you have what it takes to create a recycled ghost? If you have an old t-shirt or piece of cloth... ...a wad of plastic wrap, used packing tape... ...a plastic bag to stuff it into... ..and some glue and other random trash... then YES, you do! Every Halloween season there are a plethora of decorations to choose from, whether you are shopping in person or online. But what if you could make your own decorations for free, at home, and reduce trash? What if you could find a Halloween trash craft that your whole family could do? You CAN! This craft is so simple that there isn't even a need for follow-along photo steps. You'll need a wad of plastic wrap or other garbage - used packing tape rolled into a ball works, crumbled up paper or wrapping paper will work, just keep it lightweight and easy to shape (unless it is already a round form, say, if you decided to use one of those spaceship looking lettuce pods). You will also need a plastic bag to stuff the plastic wad/trash into, a needle and thread for the hanging loop on top, and some other random trash to make a face with. This ghost has coffee bag eyes and mouth.
If you really want to kick your trash crafting up a notch, you can add arms and/or legs to your ghostly creature, ears, etc.... think single-use plastic utensils, straws (they make great under-the-fabric arms), even the pumps on hand soap and lotions. Other variations (that don't involve sewing a loop onto your ghost): If you don't want to hang your ghost, find an appropriately sized flower pot or container (a used milk or juice carton, with or without weights in the bottom could work) and set your ghost snugly inside. If you want a ghost on a stick, find something sturdy to place inside the plastic bag before completing step 2 and tie your bag off nice and tight around it. ***** Spoiler alert: There will a plastic pump trash craft coming up later this year, so save those non-recyclable soap/lotion/shampoo pump tops. ***** Douglas Furr is a self-taught possum trash crafter with unique recycling ideas, showing us just how simple it can be to divert some of your trash into practical (and often whimsical) creations.
